Where to enjoy delicious 'Poon Choy' in Penang this coming Chinese New Year!

Where to enjoy delicious 'Poon Choy' in Penang this coming Chinese New Year!

This has to be one of the best 'Poon Choy' that I have eaten. #nuffsaid

Hakka Tree would be your best bet if you'd love to indulge in a hearty 'Poon Choy' meal for the coming Chinese New Year. This pot of delicacies are from different places around the world. Expect to find Golden Bags, Australia Sea Cucumber, New Zealand Scallops, Prawns, Chile Abalones, Preserved Oysters from China and more! The pork knuckle soup base cooked in dried scallops and dried oysters further boosts the flavour of the soup, making it so delicious! Oh my... even just writing about it makes me hungry.

Poon Choy is special in that it is composed of many layers of different ingredients. Traditionally, it is also eaten layer by layer instead of stirring everything up. However, we 'ruined' the dish by being an impatient and curious diner, ha ha! In the picture below, you could see pork tendon ball, deep-fried foo chuk (beancurd skin), white radish, yam, cabbage and the pork knuckle being dug out by us hungry monsters, lol!

This 'Poon Choy' is priced at MYR288 nett for a 6-8 pax portion (PS. UPDATED AS OF 16/1/17, PRICE CHANGED TO MYR328 NETT) with a gift of 5 x MYR30 vouchers (3 months validity from the date of purchase).

Moving on...

How can a Chinese New Year meal be complete without 'Yee Sang'? Priced at MYR38 nett (2-3 pax) / MYR66 nett (6-8 pax), you will find confetti of vegetables, jellyfish and salmon slices with fruity sweet sauce and condiments in the Yee Sang platter.

In Chinese tradition, it is believed that the tossing of Yee Sang platter brings good luck, health and prosperity for the new year.

We had deep fried Taro dumplings and 'Fu Chok' Barley dessert soup for dessert which are a favourite among the Hakka and Cantonese. I love the Taro dumplings - The external crispy net-like coat with rich, moist mashed taro batter makes me want to go for more!

Hakka Tree 'Poon Choy' and 'Yee Sang' are available from 15th January till 6th February in both Tesco Tanjung Pinang and Gurney Plaza outlets. Minimum 2 days advance booking is required.
