Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant @ Pulau Tikus, Penang
Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant is a relatively new eatery (opened for less than 2 months) located few doors from Burmah House on Burmah Road. I went there to dine in after its been opened for approximately a month then. As expected, the crowd was overwhelming like how it usually would be for most of the newly opened eateries in Penang.
The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, ideal for working people nearby but looking for a parking space could be difficult. So for those who drive there, my advise is to go early and avoid peak hours, unlike us.
We were lucky to get a table during that peak lunch hour. However, we regretted to have gone at that time as the massive crowd caused slow service and inefficiency in the lacked training staff. No menu was given to us after we were seated for 10 minutes or so. In fact, I got up to grab the menu from the counter myself as I did not know how long more were we going to continue waiting (Yes, I get impatient with inefficiency). We finally placed our order and crossed our fingers for the food waiting time.
The prayer didn't work. We had a long 45 minutes wait for our food to arrive. Was the food quality worth the wait? Maybe.....not.
The beef noodle soup (Pho Special), which is only available during lunch and as one of their recommended dishes, did not wow me. Despite the varieties of beef parts and innards, the noodles were undercooked and the beef was a little on the tough side. I also expected a bigger portion as I would normally get from other restaurants. That being said, the soup base was tasty though.
The char grilled pork chop with broken rice, also one of their signature dishes, was not bad. I like the side dish which I believe to be minced pork with egg in Vietnamese style. The whole dish would be better if the pork was juicier. This dish is also available only during lunch.
Both of us enjoyed the Vietnamese spring rolls which were served with sweet chilli sauce.
Overall, my impression was the kitchen was probably at war due to high demand at that time and the food was prepared in a rush. I would not think the food that we had is justifiable for the ridiculous long waiting time. On the other hand, my friend who went at a separate time gave a very positive feedback. I would say it is a matter of consistency.
However, I would give them a leeway as it's just opened for a month then and it was understandable there would be hiccups here and there. I may give it another try when they are more settled in and hopefully with more staff to help out then.
