Com Tam Ba Ghien @ Saigon, Vietnam
Com Tam Ba Ghien is located out of the touristy district 1 area but it was strategic to where we were heading that day so it made a perfect lunch stop for us. Upon arriving, we could already smell the fragrant of the grilled pork. Unfortunately the staffs do not speak English so ordering could be a little difficult. The staff asked us “1, 2?” (indicating the amount of dish) and we replied with “1” and then waited for it.
A plate of broken rice with grilled pork and sunny side up was served. I was a little disappointed as I expected some side dish like the pork egg pie and shredded pork skin, but I thought it would be difficult to request for it due to language barrier so I did not bother. After a while a staff came to ask “soup?” we said “yes” and were happy to be served a bowl of soup filled with pork ribs, potato and carrot.
Back to the main dish, we were thrilled by the size of the pork chop, easily twice the size of most other pork chops in Saigon. The meat was almost covering the entire plate. Compared to the pork chop we had previously at Asiana Food Town, the pork chop at Com Tam Ba Ghien was more fragrant and we could taste the smoky flavor from the hot coals’ grill. All in all, it was a great dish and com tam lovers should head over to try it out.
Make sure to order the grand slam where they have all the side dishes included – pork egg pie, shredded pork skin and sunny side up. You will be almost guaranteed to wipe your plate of goodness clean in the end!
