Bangkok style Thai cuisine @ Wang Thai, Penang.

The openings of Thai cuisine restaurants have been increasing in Penang recently. Personally, I am a Thai food lover. One of our family favourite is Wang Thai, situated on Jalan Burma, Penang. This is going to be a picture-oriented blog post with a summary of description because 'picture speaks louder than words'! So let the pictures lead your way :)

Wang Thai is a moderate size restaurants with reasonable number of tables. However, I would say reservation is recommended as it would be crowded during weekends.

Now let's talk about foooooooodddddddd ~~~ hohoho!

It is quite common to order the popular Pandan Leaf Chicken as appertizer. It is a very popular dish in Bangkok. The leaf keeps the juices of the chicken inside so you get very soft and juicy fried chicken.

Taste: 8/10

*You get 4 pieces of chicken wrapped in pandan leaf in a portion. Delicious dish. Meat is tender and juicy, yet gives a hint of crispiness. 

Next up is the famous Thai soup - Tom Yam Goong! (Tom Yam prawn soup in Thai). When I first tasted the soup, I was like: Wow! this is really spicy! But it just wont let you stop drinking it. Instead, its balance mixture of spiciness and sourness makes you ask for more! :)

The taste of the soup is good. As a person who enjoys spicy and sour taste food, I find it quite nice. But some people might think the taste is a bit too strong. Also, the texture is slightly thick/creamy. I believe they might have added some evaporated milk to come to that creamy texture.

Aha! Here comes my favorite dish! This is a must for me whenever I go for Thai cuisine. It is the steamed fish with lime and chilli!!! Yum yum!! Just thinking about it makes me drool... heehee! Seriously, you should never go for Thai food without ordering that signature dish!

Taste: 8.5/10

*Taste is appetizing if you can take the spiciness and sourness. Flavors consist of some lime juice, chili, lemongrass, garlic, ginger and probably its called cilantro leaves that you can see from the picture. Fish was fresh (sorry I can't remember what fish we ordered but if I'm not mistaken, it should be a sea bass) and the taste was just nice without too overwhelming. 

Oooooo... look at the amount of chilli... hotnesssss.... slurp!!

As for other main dishes, we had another of my top favourite - stir-fry sambal petai! (people call it smelly beans) This dish is just as good!

* For petai lovers, this is good good good! 

Do you know?

  • Petai is a fruit (surprising much? haha!)
  • Petai provides energy (2 servings enable you to do heavy activities for 90 minutes)
  • Petai is also able to prevent several illnesses and conditions such as Anemia, high blood pressure, constipation, mosquito bites, itching and swelling.

Next up is spicy stir-fry pork slices with mixed vegetables (sorry I can't remember the exact dish name). Personally, I feel this dish is just okay. Nothing special about it. My family likes it though.

Its dessert time!!

 Oops.. how could I forget to mention about the Lemongrass drink that we all had. It is a very refreshing drink and I reckon hot one is better than cold one as the ice cubes would dilute the taste of lemongrass. Here you go! a cup of refreshing lemongrass drink ;)

It is not a big cup though. So you might want to order another one if you need it to get rid of the spiciness lol~

And now... its dessert time!! (most people's all time favorite huh? heehee!) All of us had the signature Thai dessert, which is water chestnut and jack fruit in coconut milk. It is called Thab Thim Krob in Thai :D The dessert has a mild sweetness (not too sweet, just nice!) taste and portion was generous as well. I just love it!

We wanted to order the

Mango sticky rice

which is another signature Thai dessert but we figured we would be too bloated if we took in extra carbo - glutinous rice! Let's leave it to next time :)

Pricing: 7/10 (sorry I did not keep the receipt for this one so no pricing/item available but the pricing is considered average)
