Banh Xeo 46A @ Dinh Cong Trang, Saigon, Vietnam
It’s no surprise most people go to Banh Xeo 46A located at Dinh Cong Trang for one of the best banh xeos in Saigon. We went there for brunch around 11am and it was already filled with customers. We were glad there was no language barrier (hence no miscommunication) at this shop as their menu was written in English and even in Japanese for foreigners. Despite the many options on the menu, most people just go straight for the banh xeo, like we did.
We ordered an extra large banh xeo to share and a portion of my favourite Vietnamese spring roll in rice paper.
Like many other Vietnamese eateries, there was a plate of assorted green leaves at the side when our dishes were served. We couldn’t wait to dig in to the banh xeo before accustomed to the right way of eating it.
We were excited to hear the clear, crispy sound of the pancake edge, and the big prawns and juicy pork belly further enhanced our satisfactions. It was really, really delicious! I also had the best Vietnamese fresh spring rolls there, all thanks to the big prawns and the fragrant from the big chunks of juicy pork belly. We turned silent at that instant and kept ourselves busy with our food. It was definitely an awesome dining experience and now that we are back home, we both miss the banh xeo so much!
The right way of eating banh xeo:
- Place the big leaves on your palm
- Garnish with the smaller leaves like basil or shiso
- Break off a bite size piece of the pancake – hopefully including a prawn, a piece of pork, and lots of crispy edge
- Add some chillies if you like
- Wrap up in a roll and spoon on sauce
Banh Xeo 46A was also featured in my Saigon Street Food's list.
