Grub by Ahong & friends @ PJ, Malaysia - Is it worth the hype?
I heard a lot about Grub before deciding to give it a try. I heard about how good their steaks are, how difficult it was to book a table and how people try for weeks to grab a table etc.
This day has come and I was looking forward for a good steak meal. Before we come to the food, let me tell you briefly on how Grub works. It is a no-frill restaurant where you tick your food selection on the menu handed to you at the entrance before getting your table, then place and pay for your order at the cashier downstairs. The downstairs dining area is non air conditioned while upstairs is air conditioned.
Now back to the main question: Is Grub worth the hype and hoohaa? I am sorry to spill it to you guys but unfortunately its a BIG NO for me and here’s why.
I hate to write bad experiences but I guess it’s bound to happen.
We ordered the Miyazaki Wagyu A5 Tenderloin which was priced at MYR478 with stars beside the item on the menu indicating its chef’s favourite cut. It says 25 minutes wait on the menu and I was excited when the food arrived within the said duration. When I looked at the steak, I was a little confused as I was expecting to see at least some marbling or fats but there was none? Then I thought, nevermind, maybe the taste would make up for it. But…..
It turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. Firstly, the taste was rather bland for a Wagyu, the flavour was just not there and I did not feel like I was having a piece of MYR478 wagyu steak. If I was blindfolded, I wouldn’t have thought that was a “premium” steak. Secondly, the doneness was alright (I ordered medium rare), but the texture felt very, very ordinary, nothing like what I would expect from a premium steak.
To be honest, I was confused when I tasted the steak and wondered if I actually got the correct steak. I actually quietly hoped that the restaurant made a mistake so I could get it replaced (lol). I went downstairs, wanting to check with Ahong personally but the restaurant was busy and I could not catch him so I checked with the staff if that was the Miyazaki Wagyu that I ordered. Sadly, they said yes. Although typical beef tenderloin only contains minimal fats, tenderloin from Miyazaki Cattle should have noticeable marbling which adds more moisture and delicate sweetness to the cut. Unfortunately, I did not experience any of those in my steak.
I could not handle my disappointment because, imagine after paying MYR478, mind you its freaking MYR478 and did not feel the satisfaction at all after the meal! Still feeling unbelievable considering Grub seemed so promising on reviews and social media etc, I texted Grub to reconfirm and sent him a photo of the steak I had when I was back in my hotel (and yeah! Imagine coming all the way from Penang hoping to get some really good steak but left feeling disappointed 😣). A staff named Jackie attended to my WhatsApp messages and confirmed that’s their Miyazaki cut and also showed me a photo of the raw Miyazaki packed.
Look guys, I am no super beef expert but I believe I have eaten enough steaks or know enough to tell something just does not seem right here. If the most expensive steak on the menu is of this standard, I cannot imagine the rest or I was really unlucky to have ordered the wrong item on my first (also possibly last) visit. And I dare to say, no one would disagree with me that the steak we had is not worth its price at all.
So yeah, that’s my dining experience with Grub by Ahong. With everything said, I can’t deny that the service team did well attending to us. My only qualm with Grub lies in the food, which was, in all honesty, a HUGE disappointment.
