Kai Curry Bar @ Phuah Hin Leong Road, Penang
Kai Curry Bar is a cozy home-operated restaurant tucked among the colourful houses on Phuah Hin Leong road in Penang. This restaurant is not very noticeable by the street with a small red banner hanging outside the restaurant. Many would drive pass the rustic facade of Kai Curry Bar not knowing they serve interesting food. Step in and you will be welcomed by a warm and homely ambience.
The interior of the restaurant adopts old-school style decoration using wooden tables, metal chairs and tin cups. The restaurant is also filled with the drawings of Ollie, son of Kai's main chef / owner - Mag, how cute! I was in touch with Mag before, and she is very nice and friendly lady, very passionate about cooking. Did I mention there is also WiFi in the restaurant?
As the name suggests, Kai Curry Bar serves a wide variety of fusion Japanese curry dishes. They have an extensive menu with different combination. Diners get to choose between rice and udon, and pork and vegetarian curry, as well as extra toppings if you wish. We ordered Pork Katsu Curry rice with scrambled egg and Pork Katsu Curry udon. All meals include complimentary side dish and free flow roasted barley tea.
The Pork Katsu Curry rice was delicious. The pork cutlet was deep-fried to perfection, with a golden brown crisp. The pork curry sauce comes with chunks of pork and has an unique aroma. I would recommend ordering the scrambled egg as an extra topping for rice dishes as it adds flavours to the curry and rice.
I love the Pork Katsu Curry udon. The udon was springy and the curry sauce consistency was able to cling well to the noodles. The combination was amazing and the portion was generous too, for both rice and udon dishes. If I had to nitpick, I would prefer the pork cutlet to have some fats to balance the texture of the meat. I always prefer some fats ratio in my meat but if you are a lean meat lover, then this is absolutely fine for you.
Towards the end of our meal, Mag gave us a complimentary dessert which she made herself, how sweet! It was mochi with red bean paste, with a 'strawberry' surprise in the filling. I love the dessert as it tasted lovely and the sweetness was just nice. [Note: the dessert is off the menu I think]
Head to Kai Curry Bar if you want a hearty Japanese curry meal! As mentioned earlier, Mag is also available for finger food catering if you are organising a party or wedding cocktail. Do contact her to discuss further.
