Potatoes USA Event @ The Wembley . A St Giles Hotel, Penang

Oh dear potato, I can never resist it as it is one of my favorite foods! People always tell me it is unhealthy and fattening to consume too much potatoes but Potatoes USA has convinced me otherwise.

About a week ago (on 26th August 2017), we were invited to a ‘potato’ event organized by Potatoes USA, which represents US growers and processors of high-quality potatoes.  This event was held at The Wembley . A St Giles Hotel in Penang and during this event, we learned a lot about potatoes like its nutrition value and benefits, as well as ways to cook them as demonstrated by Chef Audee Cheah, PKT, PJK.

The event began officially with an introduction speech by Mr William Tan, the Penang representative of Potatoes USA. This is followed by a speech by Mr. Richard Lieu, the Trade Promotions Director of Potatoes USA. We learned that there are over 1 hundred kinds of potato in USA and they are divided into 7 categories namely Russets, Round Reds, Blue & Purple, Fingerlings, Yellow Flesh and Petites. These potatoes have different in sizes, textures, tastes and colors.  The potatoes are available fresh as well as frozen. Other than the different varieties of potato, we also learned that potato comes in different forms and shapes. Cut potatoes are sold in many forms, including straight-cut fries, tater drums, crinkle-cut fries, loop or curly fries, frozen wedges, lattice or basket-weave cuts and hash brown patties. Each type of potato has its own recommended usage or way of cooking, making them unique in its own way. Not forgetting the dehydrated potatoes or you call it instant potatoes which can be found in boxes in the grocery store. Contrary to popular belief, some are actually REAL potatoes that are put through an advance process to create premium dehydrated/instant potato products. In short, US dehydrated potato products deliver all the flavor, nutrition and versatility of potatoes in a more convenient package.

Next up was a presentation by a practicing dietitian – Ms Khoo An Jo to debunk the myths of potato and highlight its healthy goodness! Potato is often misunderstood of being the root of fattiness for consumption and one of the worst villains in the carb family. However, we learned that potatoes are not just good to eat, but good for health. With just 110 calories, one medium skin-on potato provides 30% of your daily value of Vitamin C and more potassium than a banana! Potatoes have absolutely no fat and are sodium free and cholesterol free according to Ms Khoo. What’s even better is potatoes provide the carbohydrate, potassium and energy you need to perform at your best; as it is able to fuel your body and brain throughout the day!

The highly anticipated session would be the cooking demonstration helmed by Chef Audee Cheah, PKT, PJK, who is also the president of the Penang Chef Association. With 2 fresh Russet potatoes and 2 frozen potatoes, Chef Audee effortlessly made 4 delectable dishes: U.S. Potato and Prawn Kerabu, Curry Chicken Stuffed U.S. Potatoes, Kimchi Seaweed U.S. Lattice Cut Fries and Chilli Flavoured U.S. Potato Wedges in Lettuce Cups.

I am thankful to be invited to this Potatoes USA event as I was filled with potato’s knowledge and it made me appreciate potato even more than before! We were also given fresh potatoes with some recipes, and details about US potatoes as door gift. I went home and made some roasted potatoes with my Kifer air fryer and it turned out amazing! As Chef Audee demonstrated, using air fryer to supplement frying would not compromise the taste and texture plus it is an healthy alternative as it requires only less than a spoon of oil.
